David Patrick O'Brien

David Patrick O'Brien graduated with a joint degree from the School of Nutrition Science and Policy and the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy in 1997. Having first been exposed to the issue of hunger as a senior in high school in Buffalo, New York, David pledged to work to eradicate hunger, famine and malnutrition in today's world. David had a strong sense of humor, a commitment to people living in extreme deprivation and a passionate sense of adventure. He traveled in Central America, worked in Sudan and Kenya as well as with the Feinstein International Famine Center on early warning systems to prevent famine. David died at the age of 29 while in India researching famine in the sub-continent. The David Patrick O'Brien Grant, established in 1998, is given jointly by the School of Nutrition Science and Policy and The Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy in memory of David's life and commitment to the poor.

Purpose

It is the purpose of the David Patrick O'Brien grants to foster first-hand experience with people who live in poverty. One David Patrick O'Brien grant will be given yearly to support the summer research or internship of a student enrolled at the School of Nutrition Science and Policy or the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy. It is the intent of this grant to support work in the areas of hunger and famine, humanitarianism, poverty reduction and/or socio-economic development. Preference will be given to projects that are field based, working with people living in poverty, and that are tied directly to local agencies.

Who May Apply

Prospective grantees are limited to students enrolled at The Fletcher School or The School of Nutrition at Tufts University and that are between their first and second year at either School. [Joint degree candidates can also apply between their second and third year.] Fletcher/Nutrition students who accept this grant must agree to the following terms: 1. Prepare a written report of internship or research findings for the Selection Committee, 2. Give a seminar on campus open to the Tufts community on the results of the summer work, 3. Participate in the Selection Committee for the David Patrick O'Brien Grant the following year, and 4. Participate in a one-day event in Buffalo, New York in the spring of the following year following the grant to report to the Buffalo community on the summer work. [Costs of the Buffalo trip will be covered separately by the Selections Committee.]
