As a school in the Jesuit tradition, Canisius High School is dedicated to forming young men to become people for others. A Canisius student ought to be first and foremost one who lives not only for himself, but for others. He must be capable of and willing to serve those who are less fortunate or in need. As in the gospels, he must be committed to making life better for his neighbor.
Canisius High School's Christian Service program fosters a student's growth in this way of living by providing all students with the opportunity to serve others and to reflect on this experience. In the combination of service and reflection, Canisius students respond as disciples of the risen Christ.
Students in the Christian Service program serve young children, the homeless, the disabled, the elderly and the dying. They work in hospitals, nursing homes, day care centers, emergency shelters, and parishes. Students participate in supervisory relationships at the agencies in which they work and in reflection groups at school.
Because of its unique contribution to the mission of Canisius High School, the Christian Service Program is compulsory for graduation.
