The annual "David's Dinner for Famine Relief" were held at Canisius High School in Buffalo, NY. The purpose of the dinner was to remind us of those who go hungry in the world each night and to fan the flames of volunteerism that David O'Brien's life and example left for us. At every table a single person received a full dinner, while the rest ate a small, partial meal. This reminds us that although many of us may not see or experience hunger first-hand, a large portion of the world population goes hungry every day. As the theme for the dinner said, "We may not fill your stomach, but we hope to fill your heart."
Throughout the past years, thousands of attendees and student volunteers have participated in fighting hunger through their involvement in David's Dinner. A number of other projects, related to David's Dinner, have also been initiated by schools and organizations aiming to fight hunger and raise awareness. From the funds raised from David's Dinner 1999 & 2000, students were able to work on projects in Appalachia; Camden, New Jersey; Quito, Ecuador; and Indonesia. Hundreds of lives were touched as a result of that one evening.
This year students from Canisius High School are not only volunteering to help serve at the dinner, but are coordinating a food drive and joining with other high school students in a fast as a show of solidarity against world hunger.David showed that one person can make a difference in the world and we hope to continue his fight. You too can make a difference.
